FAQ

My Check Engine Light is on—can I still drive?

If it’s solid, you can usually drive gently to us. If it’s flashing, that’s an active misfire—stop driving and call us; driving can damage the catalytic converter.

How long does a proper diagnostic take?

Initial testing is typically 30–60 minutes. Complex faults (intermittent, wiring, multiple codes) may take 90–120 minutes with advanced testing/road data logs.

Will you just clear the code?

We don’t “clear and pray.” We fix the root cause, then verify with monitors and a road test so the light stays off.

What are the most common Check Engine codes you see?

Misfire P0300–P030X, EVAP leaks P0442/P0455, O2/catalyst P013X/P0420, MAF/MAP P0101–P0108, EGR/PCV faults, thermostat/coolant temp P0128, and fuel system lean/rich P0171/P0172.

Is a loose gas cap really a thing?

Sometimes—yes. But many EVAP leaks are tiny hoses, purge/vent valves, or cracked canisters. We pressure/smoke-test to confirm.

Why did the light come back after someone cleared it?

Because the readiness monitors hadn’t run or the fault wasn’t fixed. Once the drive cycle completes, the light returns. We repair and confirm monitors are complete.

Can low battery voltage cause warning lights?

Absolutely. Weak batteries or poor grounds cause module glitches and false codes. We test battery/alternator/starter as part of diagnostics.

Do you diagnose drivability issues without a code?

Yes. Hesitation, rough idle, stalling, or hard starts can exist without codes. We analyze live data, fuel pressure, compression, and ignition waveforms.

What tools do you use?

Factory-level scan tools, bi-directional controls, smoke machine, fuel-pressure gauges, oscilloscopes, thermal imaging, and gas analyzers when needed.

What’s included in the report I receive?

Codes with plain-English explanations, live-data snapshots, likely causes, parts/labor estimate, and clear next steps—no jargon, no surprises.

Do you handle intermittent faults that only happen sometimes?

Yes—data logging, wiggle tests, heat/soak replication, and harness inspections help us catch time-based and vibration-based issues.

Is it safe to drive with a catalyst code (P0420)?

If performance and fuel economy are normal and no misfire, it’s usually safe to drive short-term. But delaying repairs may elevate emissions and costs—we’ll confirm the cause (sensor vs. cat).

Can you tell if it’s an O2 sensor or the catalytic converter?

We compare upstream/downstream sensor behavior, fuel trims, and Mode $06 cat efficiency to pinpoint sensor vs. converter.
