Caledon Winter & Light-Truck Tire Selection Guide
Compare winter, highway and all-terrain tire choices for Caledon vehicles. Check load ratings, cold pressure, snow qualification and fitment.
Choose tires for the vehicle’s rated loads and actual use. A highway-terrain, all-terrain or mud-terrain label describes a category; it does not by itself establish winter suitability or the required load capacity.

How should an SUV or light-truck tire be specified?
| Decision | Direct answer | Useful booking information |
|---|---|---|
| Load and inflation | Tire construction, load index and approved operating pressure must suit the application. | OEM specification, actual loading and towing needs. |
| Road and off-road use | Highway, all-terrain and mud-terrain categories involve different trade-offs. | Regular road use, noise preferences and off-pavement needs. |
| Winter qualification | Check the snow marking on the exact model and size; tread appearance alone is insufficient. | Required size and expected winter use. |
Match the duty cycle to the tire specification
For an SUV or pickup, consider road noise, wet braking, towing loads and off-pavement use alongside tread appearance. P-metric and LT-metric replacements need application-specific load and inflation evaluation. A Load Range label is not a substitute for checking the load index and approved operating pressure. Verify snow qualification for the exact model and size; not every tire in a broad category has the same marking.
Specify a pickup or SUV tire for its real load
- Provide towing and loading needs together with the OEM tire and inflation requirements. Maximum sidewall pressure is not a universal cold-pressure target.
- Identify passenger, LT or HL construction and the actual load index. A tread category or Load Range label is not the complete service specification.
- Check the exact model and size for 3PMSF where winter snow qualification is relevant. An aggressive A/T or M/T pattern does not establish winter capability.
- Compare wet-road behaviour, noise and road use with off-pavement needs before selecting a more aggressive tread.
Where a construction change is proposed, request a vehicle-specific load/inflation assessment. Do not transfer the old pressure or assume a higher category label resolves every load requirement.
Read the specification, not just the wheel diameter
A marking such as 225/45R17 94V identifies width, aspect ratio, construction, rim diameter, load index and speed symbol. The final two ratings matter as much as the size. Confirm the vehicle placard, OEM fitment and required load capacity; an XL, LT or HL designation is not interchangeable with a standard-load tire by appearance alone.
Aftermarket wheels also need correct width, offset, bolt pattern, centre bore, fastener seat and brake clearance. For AWD vehicles, check the manufacturer’s limits on circumference and tread-depth differences. Our new and used tire guide explains the quote inputs and tire categories. Named models are examples, not a live stock list.
Choose a seasonal setup before the cold arrives
Use the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) marking to identify snow-traction qualification; an M+S marking alone is different. Winter tires suit sustained cold and winter road conditions, while all-weather tires offer a year-round compromise. Summer performance tires require particular care as temperatures fall. Transport Canada uses 7°C as a planning threshold and recommends four winter tires. Its snow-use guidance cautions against tread worn close to 4 mm; that is not a universal legal wear limit.
Keep the vehicle-approved size and service description, or an approved winter fitment. Staggered vehicles can require different front and rear sizes. Book a seasonal tire change before a forecast becomes an urgent scheduling problem.
