Verify a proposed winter wheel package
Confirm approved wheel diameter and width, offset, centre-bore centring, fastener seat and clearance around the brake package. A smaller diameter wheel can fail brake clearance even where the tire’s overall diameter looks suitable. Verify the required sensor protocol for direct TPMS, including how the second sensor set is recognized. Ask for the complete package specification in writing.
Check a downsized winter wheel package
- Confirm that the proposed wheel clears the actual brake caliper and rotor package; shared vehicle names can have different brake options.
- Verify width, offset, centre bore and load capacity alongside the bolt pattern. Include the correct fastener seat and engagement requirements.
- Check the approved tire’s overall diameter, load capacity and any front/rear differences against the vehicle’s permitted fitment.
- Specify direct-TPMS sensor compatibility and the recognition procedure for the second set. Sensor programming and vehicle relearning are separate decisions.
Request the package details before ordering. An acceptable rim diameter or a visually similar wheel does not establish an approved winter combination.
Read the specification, not just the wheel diameter
A marking such as 225/45R17 94V identifies width, aspect ratio, construction, rim diameter, load index and speed symbol. The final two ratings matter as much as the size. Confirm the vehicle placard, OEM fitment and required load capacity; an XL, LT or HL designation is not interchangeable with a standard-load tire by appearance alone.
Aftermarket wheels also need correct width, offset, bolt pattern, centre bore, fastener seat and brake clearance. Distinguish a wheel swap from mounting loose tires
A seasonal wheel swap installs tires already mounted on their own wheels. Loose tires need demounting, mounting and balancing; this requires different equipment and a different quote. Provide wheel size, vehicle details, locking-key availability and photos of the assemblies before booking.
Wheel installation requires approved lifting points, clean mating surfaces, compatible hardware and the OEM torque specification. Lubricate fasteners only when the procedure calls for it. Direct TPMS sensors may need application-specific programming and/or a relearn; indirect TPMS generally uses a vehicle reset procedure. Confirm sensor compatibility and included labour in the installation and balancing estimate.
